For as long as I can remember, I’ve been fascinated by birth. Growing up, I was the child who wanted hear my own birth story over and over; it was often regaled at birthday celebrations, listen to adults recount their own experiences, and learn everything I could about how life begins. This curiosity and love for birth stayed with me, and as I grew older, I felt an undeniable pull toward birth work. It wasn’t until attending the births of friends and family members that I realized I was meant to do this work full-time, providing others with the care, support, and knowledge that makes such a powerful difference in this life-changing moment.

I chose to become a doula because I believe that every family deserves to feel empowered and supported through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. Birth is an experience that should be shaped by informed choices, emotional comfort, and an environment of trust, and that’s exactly what I aim to offer as a doula.

What is a Doula?

A doula is a trained birth support professional who provides continuous emotional, physical, and informational support to families during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the postpartum period. While doctors, midwives, and nurses focus on the medical side of birth, doulas are there to hold space for your emotional and physical needs, ensuring that you feel calm, confident, and informed every step of the way.

Unlike healthcare providers, doulas don’t perform clinical tasks like taking your blood pressure or delivering the baby. Instead, my role is to support you in having the birth experience that feels right for you, whether that means helping you find comfortable labor positions, offering words of encouragement, or explaining what’s happening at each stage so you feel empowered to make informed decisions.

Why I Became a Doula

The more I learned about birth work, the more I realized that the physical and emotional well-being of families during birth is deeply interconnected. I saw firsthand how having the right support could transform the birth experience from one filled with fear or uncertainty into one filled with confidence and empowerment.

I was drawn to birth work because it felt like a calling—an opportunity to serve others during one of the most intimate and profound moments in their lives. Birth, for me, is not just a medical event; it’s a powerful journey that holds the potential for transformation, healing, and deep connection. I wanted to be a part of that journey for others, helping families feel seen, heard, and nurtured throughout the process.

The Role I Play as Your Doula

As a doula, my goal is simple: to be a source of continuous support during your pregnancy, labor, and postpartum journey. Here’s how I can help:

  • Emotional Support: Birth is as much an emotional experience as it is a physical one. Whether it’s your first time or your fourth, there are often moments of excitement, uncertainty, and even anxiety. I’m here to listen, offer reassurance, and remind you that your body knows exactly what to do.

  • Physical Comfort: Labor can be challenging, and having someone by your side who knows how to help can make all the difference. From suggesting different labor positions to providing hands-on comfort techniques like massage, I’m here to help make the experience as comfortable as possible.

  • Informational Guidance: There are so many decisions to be made throughout pregnancy and birth. I’m here to provide the information you need, whether it’s explaining your options for pain management, helping you understand the stages of labor, or making sure you feel confident about your birth plan.

  • Partner Support: Birth is a team effort, and if you have a partner, I’ll also work with them to ensure they feel supported and involved. Whether they need a break, guidance on how to assist you during labor, or reassurance that everything is going as it should, I’m there for them, too.

The Benefits of Having a Doula

Having a doula can make a significant difference in the overall birth experience, and research backs that up. Studies show that having continuous support from a doula can lead to:

  • Fewer interventions: Individuals with doula support are less likely to need interventions such as cesarean sections, forceps, or vacuum-assisted deliveries.

  • Shorter labor: Continuous, personalized support during labor often leads to shorter labor durations.

  • Less use of pain medication: Some people find they need fewer or no pain medications when they have a doula by their side.

  • Greater satisfaction with birth: Families often report feeling more positive about their birth experience with the presence of a doula, citing a sense of calm, empowerment, and control over their choices.

The Doula-Client Relationship: A Partnership in Your Birth Journey

The relationship I build with each family begins long before labor starts. During pregnancy, we’ll have the chance to get to know each other, discuss your hopes and concerns, and create a birth plan that feels aligned with your values. I’ll listen to your preferences, whether you’re planning a natural home birth, a medicated hospital birth, or anything in between.

When the big day arrives, I’ll be by your side throughout labor, offering unwavering support. My role is to make sure you feel nurtured, informed, and confident, no matter what twists and turns the birth process might take.

And after your baby is born, I’ll continue to support you as you navigate the early days of parenthood, offering postpartum care to ensure you feel settled, rested, and prepared for this new chapter.

Why You Might Want a Doula

Choosing a doula is a personal decision, and it’s not the right fit for everyone. But if you’re looking for someone to provide personalized, compassionate care—someone who will be there to support your physical, emotional, and informational needs through every stage of your birth journey—a doula can be a game-changer.

Whether you’re preparing for your first baby or adding another to your family, the continuous support of a doula can make the difference between feeling uncertain and feeling empowered. I became a doula because I believe that every family deserves that kind of support, and I’d be honored to walk with you on your birth journey.

If you’re curious about how I can support you as a doula, don’t hesitate to reach out. Birth is a transformative experience, and I’m here to make sure you feel fully supported and empowered along the way.
